Dear Friend of Lotus,

As we approach our 25th anniversary of bringing multi-cultural music and dance to NYC and beyond, we take a moment to reflect on how far we have come in the past 24 years. When we began in 1989, a few hundred people attended our classes and workshops each year. Today we welcome over 10,000 people a year in our classes, workshops, arts in education programs and outside bookings throughout the tri-state area. This year, Lotus visited 21 schools, bringing multicultural dance programs to nearly 6,000 students, many in underserved communities in New York City.

While 2013 was a challenging year for Lotus, it allowed us to get back to our roots and reconnect with family and friends who have stood by us for so many years. It was also a year to celebrate the many cultures that help shape who we are today. For those of you who celebrated with us this past year, thank you for joining us. If you couldn’t make it, here’s a sampling of what you missed.

  • World in the City: Hindustani Music--A Comparison of Benares and Maihar Styles and Kathak--A Comparison of Lucknow and Jaipur Styles, supported by New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA)
  • Tributaries: The Music of Tabla hosted by Samir Chatterjee
  • Ryukyuan Music and Folk Dance with Junko Fisher
  • Cambodian Dance Master class with Chey Chankethya, as part of the Seasons of Cambodia festival
  • 11th Annual Drums Along the Hudson Native American and Multicultural celebration, sponsored in part by Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA)
  • Dancing Across Cultural Borders in Harlem: a series of multicultural programs featuring the Roots of Flamenco, Burmese Dance and the Magic of Polynesia
We have an exciting year ahead of us, as we will kick off our 25th anniversary with a Dancing Across Cultural Borders: A World Dance Festival on January 26th at the Faison Firehouse Theatre Harlem, NYC. Other events planned include a Young Talent Showcase for Classical Indian Music in February, a World in the City program: Odissi – A Comparison of Two Styles in March, and the 12th Annual Drums Along the Hudson.

These and other programs cannot continue without the help of our Lotus friends and family. Earlier this year, we launched a successful “25 for 25 Campaign”, where many of our loyal friends and supporters donated $25 or more to help Lotus make it to our 25th year. In case you missed this opportunity, the end of the year is a chance to help us celebrate our 25th anniversary by making a tax-deductible contribution. Please help us continue to keep multicultural traditional performing arts alive and accessible to all by making a tax deductible gift today. Your help is crucial at this time.
